New Mexico Bird Boarding

Welcome to New Mexico Bird Boarding! We are a home based pet-sitting service located in Rio Rancho, NM – just minutes from Bernalillo & Westside Albuquerque. We specialize in boarding & grooming exotic pet birds, such as parrots of all sizes. Our dedicated facility for bird boarding sets us apart, & we are proud that our clients never have to worry about their feathered friends being exposed to predatory animals such as dogs or cats in a traditional kennel setting or to other dangers that may come with hiring a pet-sitter at home. For the good of our community, we ask all of our clients to stay up to date on their pet’s wellness & we will quarantine new birds, young birds, birds with a history of exposure to illness, or birds showing any signs of stress or illness upon arrival, in order to keep everyone safe.

Boarding Other Animals

Please keep in mind that many times we are also able to accommodate boarding your other pets as well, since our bird boarding facility is separate from the main house. Other pets we accept include cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, rodents, & reptiles. Please ask us how we might be able to assist in training your dog with our board and train program, or if you are looking to board a service animal or other working dog, as these are not pets and require special handling from a qualified dog trainer! We can also board one aggressive dog at a time, pets that take medications, or pets that have other special needs.

Who We Are

Our Team Lead & Founder, Anna Sloan, grew up in an animal loving family & had the pleasure of interacting with a large variety of different animals from a young age, often announcing that she wanted to become a veterinarian when she grew up. Anna was born blind and worked hard to regain sight in one of her eyes, a journey that has created in her the compassion to love others, and most especially her animal family members who always saw her through hard times. Anna has had a special interest in birds since she can remember, & started working specifically with pet birds in 2001 when she adopted her first cockatiel. Since that time, she has handled and worked with nearly every species of pet parrot commonly kept in captivity. In 2015, Anna successfully trained her own Husky mixed breed dog to become a service animal and has since puppy raised or fully trained 9 other dogs for people with disabilities.

As the Founder & Director at Macaw & Cockatoo Rescue of New Mexico, Anna has more than 20 years of intensive, hands on experience, rehabilitating & placing more than 1,300 pet birds into new homes, as well as helping to support thousands of other bird loving families who were in need of her services, including free emergency veterinary care for animals that belonged to low income families. From the tiniest parrotlet to the giant, majestic hyacinth macaw & everything in between, Anna has had them all relinquished to her rescue with the confidence & trust that she would make good decisions for their future. Each surrendered bird has been treated like a precious family member, has been properly vetted, rehabilitate when needed, & new homes have been carefully screened by Anna. The best part has always been allowing the birds to choose their new family.

As other rescues have popped up to fill the void in our community, Anna is still rescuing a few birds at a time, but has shifted to focusing her talents on offering high quality boarding and grooming, so that her clients can finally go out of town with the confidence that their bird is in the hands of a true professional, who understands the often complicated needs of these remarkable avians.

Every day, our facility is blessed with volunteers within the community who come to spend time with the birds, make them special treats and toys, clean cages, and help us with technical support. Without these volunteers, we would not be able to serve you! This is a teaching facility and we may have visitors come to learn more about the birds. We always respect the specific instructions left by our boarding clients as to whether or not they want their bird to receive hands on interaction or to remain caged during their visitation.

Our Amenities & What to Expect

Our main aviary is a freestanding, 400sq ft indoor facility on an acre of private property, with heating, cooling, and running water. The only animals kept in this aviary are birds with no access to chemicals, Teflon, toxins, or predators. Each of the birds in our main aviary must be over one year old and up to date on wellness exam/veterinary care. If it is possible that a bird might not be well or is showing signs of distress, the bird will instead be boarded in Anna’s house. We monitor birds carefully and move them as needed to accommodate their comfort or safety while staying with us. Most birds really enjoy boarding with other birds nearby.

We provide safe, large, powder-coated caging for birds of all sizes. With rare exception, each bird will have his or her own cage. We have around 15 cages at any given time, available for boarding in our main facility. Please ask us if you would rather provide the caging for your bird as that can usually be accommodated.

We ask that owners please provide their bird’s regular food to ensure that their bird will eat during boarding. This is carefully monitored. Bringing familiar items such as perches & toys can also help new birds to relax and settle in. Fresh foods are welcome & will be refrigerated with your bird’s name on any packaging. Fresh food bowls will only be offered for a short period of time each day to avoid spoiling.

For birds who are kept cage free, we can accommodate this by using one of our other private aviaries as long as it is available. Most of our play stands are in the main house and birds are taken out to play on rotation, per owner instructions & only at the comfort of each individual bird. Flighted birds are welcome but they must be transported in a kennel.

Grooming

Anna has been grooming pet birds for the last 16 years including grooming sharp talons and reshaping long, broken, or deformed beaks with a working knowledge that each species has unique features that must be replicated in order for these birds to enjoy good health. We do not normally clip the wings of our own birds or rescues but we are happy to clip wings at your request. Please discuss this with us so that we can be sure to give your bird the clip you are looking for!

Rescue and Rehabilitation

Our facility is affiliated with Macaw and Cockatoo Rescue of New Mexico.
